What is anaphylaxis?
Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. It can develop rapidly and requires urgent treatment.
Triggers can include foods such as nuts, peanuts, milk, eggs and shellfish, as well as medicines, insect stings and other allergens.
Recognising the symptoms and responding quickly is essential.

New allergy-safety requirements for schools
The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026 introduced statutory allergy-safety duties for schools in England, including a requirement for an allergy safety policy. The Department for Education has subsequently published statutory guidance setting out what schools should do to support pupils with allergies.
The guidance includes putting allergy-safety training in place for all staff, arrangements for pupils with allergies, Individual Healthcare Plans, incident and near-miss recording, and arrangements concerning adrenaline devices.
The Government has also highlighted the importance of staff training and the availability of emergency adrenaline auto-injectors as part of the strengthened approach to allergy safety in schools.
